Janette Toral's Writing Project Link:
My sister had been raving about Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs for 2010, brainchild of Janette Toral (of Digital Filipino fame). It's only now that I've heard of this (helleur, hermit emerging in the Philippine blogosphere over here!) so I was quite excited to find that there's a sort of award that focuses on the newer blogs. Many of my nominees aren't exactly newbies, as I will discuss later, but their blogs fit the bill.
This is quite a daunting task since many of my favorite new blog authors have not been updating for quite some time. I even had to nudge some of my nominees to go update. Anyhoo, here are my nominees:
Blog: The Reluctant Stylista
Author: Alexandra Lapa, though I call her Thundersenshi (yes, she is my sister)
Reason for nomination: Although Alex is not new to the websphere, being a self-educated web designer since age 12, she only realized that she loved fashion recently. Reluctant Stylista was born in late 2009. She was a tomboy growing up (even her friends were shocked that she's studying to become a stylist now), so I find her blog helpful to those who had the same experience. She's right about one thing: all women want to look good, even those who are androgynous. You'll see her feature so many styles and many of these are friendly to women of all inclinations. It also doesn't hurt that she features many upcoming models, some of whom have unconventional looks.
Author: Dong Santos
Reason for nomination: Dong is one of the people I will call a multidisciplinary artist. He was a graduate of Multimedia Arts but ended up continuing his father's fashion design business. Many of his blog posts feature his interests in various forms of art, from film. Dong is also an explorer, so you'll see him feature many spots in and out of the country, although he professes deep love for the Philippines' beautiful scenery. Dong is funny and silly in a very endearing way, but his posts show a lot of substance.
Blog: Manila Life
Author: Manila Stone
Reason for nomination: I stumbled upon this blog when I was looking at my tracker stats. My eyes actually rounded at the amount of information about contests. Wow. I almost wish this blog had been around earlier (though that would mean I wouldn't get to nominate it), because there was a time that I had enjoyed joining (and winning) numerous contests. And, believe it or not, there is a community for contest addicts. They really take this hobby seriously, so much that they've turned contest entries into art. I can only be amazed at the wonderful things that result from competitions. This is a blog that caters to that community. It's also very up-to-date when it comes to events in and around Manila.
Author: Kenneth Tan
Reason for nomination: Like Alex, Ken began tinkering with websites when he was 12. His portfolio is impressive, no doubt about that. But it was only in late 2009 that he began this blog. He has a lot of opinions about happenings in Manila as he dabbles into a mishmash of things ranging from the mundane to the very technical. His varied interests can be seen in his 2009 exhibit Warhaus Prjct, which featured street art and street food. Ken's tone is very sarcastic, which many people may find harsh, but he doesn't mince with words so his messages cut effectively across.
Author: Paul Adrian de Vera
Reason for nomination: Paul is a Studio Artist who also enjoys coming up with concepts for advertising. Like Ken, he has a lot of opinions about many things, but his writings make it seem like he's aiming to become a Patrick Flores apprentice (Patrick Flores, as I have mentioned before, is one of my favorite curators). His posts encompass a myriad of topics, from showbiz (the Ricky Martin entry caught my attention) to politics. When he goes into theoretical discussions, however, readers with low attention span may want to carry a bucket load of tissues -- he is nosebleed inducing. I love his discussions, though.
There, my list. Hrn. I just noticed that 4 out of 5 nominees here are Multimedia Artists, 2 are from the College of Saint Benilde (Alex and Dong) and 2 are from Asia Pacific College (Paul and Kenneth). Interesting!
